Train-based walk 2.5 Boots 10 miles 340m climb Leader: Sarah Purdue Description: A linear walk from Bamford with a long steady climb up onto the wild beauty of Stanage Edge before descending down to Hathersage. Meet Point: Piccadilly Railway Station for train at 09:22 Suggested Ticket: Return to Hathersage £9.10 (a Wayfarer at £10 may work out cheaper). Walk Start Location: Bamford Rail Station, S32 1EG. Walk Start Time: 10:20 Walk Finish: Hathersage Waypoints: Hurst Clough, Dennis Knoll, High Neb, Stanage Edge, Cowper Stone, Scraperlow. Return Services: 17.32, 19.32 Extra: Stanage Edge is an open exposed escarpment, so please wrap up warmly. If conditions are icy, the walk may be modified.
Saturday 9th: Bromley Cross Circular (Jumbles Reservoir, Turton & Entwistle Reservoir and Wayoh Reservoir)Train-based walk 2 boot, 10 miles 360m climb Leader: Pete Dolan Walk details updated - now starting from Bromley Cross station. Description: A gentle walk around 3 large reservoirs north of Bolton. Starting from Bromley Cross Railway Station we head towards Jumbles Reservoir and then along moorland path Witton Weavers Way before reaching Turton & Entwistle and Wayoh Reservoirs. (Map OS Explorer 287) Meet Point: Victoria Railway Station @ 9:50 Train Time: 10:00 Walk Start Location: Bromley Cross Station. Walk Start Time: 10:40 Suggested Ticket: Off Peak Day Return £3.30 or Northern Duo Ticket £4.95 (2 people must travel together). Sunday 10th: Sheffield, The Ox Stones and the Hidden ValleyThis walk has been cancelled due to the current weather conditions and will be reinstated at a future date. Car-based walk 2 Boots 10 miles Leader: Owain Roberts Description: This walk provides a great illustration of the proximity of the city of Sheffield to the Peak District. The walk begins amongst the rivers and waterfalls of Endcliffe Park before heading out into the Peak District. After around 3 miles there is a viewpoint with great views over the city and on a clear day as far as the Humber Bridge and Lincoln Cathedral. The walk then crosses moorland before passing the famous Ox Stones where there will be a stop for lunch. We will then pass through the densely forested ‘Lady Canning’s plantation’ before heading down the steep sided Limb Valley (Known locally as the Hidden Valley). The walk then crosses farmland before heading back towards the park where there will be an ice cream stop. From here it is a short distance back to Hunters Bar. There will be time for a pint of Sheffield ale in the Porterbrook before returning home. Meet Point: Outside the Knott Bar, Deansgate Locks, 9.15am Walk Start: Hunters Bar, Sheffield (maps will be provided at the meet point!) Walk Start Time: 10:45 Saturday 16th: A Wintry HikeTrain-based walk 2 Boots 8 miles 400 m climb Leader: Saskia Roselaar Description: A classic linear walk from Hope to Edale. The walk starts gently along the river Noe. We then climb Lose Hill and follow the ridge via Hollins Cross to Mam Tor, descending into Edale and a well-deserved pub stop at the Nag's Head. Meet Point: Manchester Piccadilly Railway Station for train at 09:45. Suggested Ticket: Return to Hope for £9.10 or, if you are using the bus in the GMPTE area, a Wayfarer for £10. Walk Start: Hope station at 10.40. Waypoints: Lose Hill, Hollins Cross, Mam Tor, Edale. Return Services: From Edale to Manchester Piccadilly at xx:47 until 19.47; then 21.08 and 22.56. Extra: No toilets at Walk Start, and no pub stops until the end! The route can be boggy, so gaiters are advisable.
Sunday 17th: Sherwood Forest in Yorkshire??!??Train-based walk 1 Boot 6 miles 300m climb Leader: Adrian Radcliffe Description: A scenic walk through lovely countryside taking in a canal, a wood, a couple of hills and 2 very good pubs. Please note that some paths are tricky but all are passable, as I walked the route on the 10th January. Meet Point: Manchester Victoria Railway Station for train at 11:00. Suggested Ticket: Pair up with a friend for a Duo Return to Hebden Bridge Walk Start: Hebden Bridge at 11:52. Waypoints: Rochdale Canal Waterworks, Pecket Well and the Fox & Goose. Return Services: xx:45 until 20:45 then 22:27. Extra: Free toilets are available at the station. Gaiters advisable due to snow in places.
Saturday 23rd: A Walk of Highs and LowsTrain-based walk 2 Boots 8 miles 400m climb Leader: David Bratley Description: An easy walk mainly on good paths, with a few steep ascents. Meet Point: Manchester Piccadilly Railway Station at 09:30. Suggested Ticket: Return to Broadbottom Walk Start Location: Godley station at 10:05. Waypoints: Werneth Low, Erncroft wood, Ernocroft, Higher Chisworth, Woodseats, Broadbottom. Walk Finish: Broadbottom Return Services: xx.16 and xx.46 until 19.46 then xx.46 until 22.46.
Saturday 30th: Glossop and Yellowslacks CircularPlease note change in walk leader, now meeting at walk start. Train-based walk 3.5 Boots 10 miles 500m climb Leader: Rick Connor, meeting at Walk Start Description: Likely to be a reasonably challenging walk: probably boggy conditions, or snow – if it’s still around. We follow Yellowslacks and meet the Pennine Way, returning via Doctor’s Gate. Meet Point: Manchester Piccadilly Railway Station (under the departures board) at 09:30. Train time: 09:48 Walk Start Location: Glossop Railway station Walk Start Time: 10:19 Suggested Ticket: Return to Glossop, £3.30 Waypoints: Lightside, Dog Rock, Hern Stones, Old Woman, Doctor’s Gate, Mossy Lea Farm. Sunday 31st: Mud Will Tear Us Apart linear walkTrain-based walk 1.5 Boots 8 miles Leader: Gavin Poulton, meeting at Walk Start Description: A linear walk from Alderley Edge to Macclesfield. Pretty flat apart from the climb up to The Edge. This is a continuation of my walk from 2007 which was abandoned due a spot of rain! You'll need to expect mud on this one too! Meet Point: Manchester Piccadilly station for train at 12:03. Walk Start Location: Alderley Edge station at 12:40 Suggested Ticket: MAN-Alderley Edge single £5.70 + Macc-MAN single £3. Or buy a Wayfarer £10 if you're going to use it on your trip to the Meet Point (buy from main stations or GMPTE shops. NOT available on train) Waypoints: Alderley Edge, Edge Hill, Daniel Hill, Turner House Farm, Allen's Farm, Legh Hall, Woodend Farm, Spittle House, Prestbury, Bollin Way, Macclesfield Cemetery. Return Services: Cheaper Virgin services xx:42 from Macclesfield, plus at least another 2 per hour.
FEBRUARYSaturday 6th: Pennine Way - Marsden to GlossopTrain-based walk 3.5 Boots 15 miles 400 m climb Leader: Saskia Roselaar Description: A linear walk from Marsden to Glossop, following the Pennine Way for half of the walk. We start along the moors for a few miles, followed by a steep descent to arrive at the reservoirs in Longdendale. We finish up in Glossop, where we will enjoy the real ales and veggie food in The Globe. Meet Point: Manchester Victoria Railway Station for train at 09:27. Suggested Ticket: RailRanger for £4 includes journey in if you use a GMPTE train station and a single from Greenfield to Marsden, £4.80 or £6.20 for 2 on a duo single. Walk Start: Marsden Station at 10:00. Waypoints: Blakeley Reservoir, Wessenden Head, Black Hill, Crowden Great Brook, Rakes Rocks, Crowden, Torside Reservoir, Padfield, Glossop. Return Services: From Glossop to Manchester Piccadilly at xx:09 and xx:39 every hour until 19.39; then every hour at xx:39 until 22:39. Walk leader will meet group at Disley train station. Suggested Ticket: £5 return to Disley Walk Start: Disley train station at 11.20. Waypoints: Green Lane, Cock Knoll, Whalley Lane, Furness Vale, Howcroft Farm, Sett Valley Way, Peak Forest Canal. Sunday 21st: A Dream Of A Walk (or A Walk Around The Clock)Train-based walk 2 Boots 10 miles Leader: Gavin Poulton Description: An undulating walk through places where nature is gradually returning to this former industrial land. A few mini-hills requiring a little climbing plus an unusual pub stop. Meet Point: Manchester Piccadilly station for train leaving at 11:50 (calls at Oxford Road 11:53) Suggested Ticket: Day return to Earlestown £6.50 + single from Earlestown-Lea Green £1.40. Walk Start Location: Lea Green station at 12:24 Waypoints: Marshall's Cross, Sutton Manor Colliery, Clock Face Country Park, Gorsey Lane, Colliers oss Common Nature Reserve, Wheatacre Face, Burtonwood, Boarded Barn Farm, Sankey Canal, Earlestown. Return Services: From Earlestown at x:10 & x:33. Extra: There's a point where you can leave to make a 5-mile walk.
Sunday 28th: The Short Half - Whernside, Yorkshire DalesCar-based walk 3 Boots 10 miles 550m climb Leader: Adrian Radcliffe Description: A steep ascent up Ellerbeck with a gentle down hill after the summit. Meet Point: Deansgate Locks, Whitworth Street West, Manchester, M1 5LH at 08:00 Walk Start Location: Chapel-le-Dale Bunk House. Walk Start Time: 10:00. Suggested Route: Click here for printable directions. Waypoints: Chapel Le Dale, Ellerbeck, Whernside, Pot Hole, Slack Hill, Ribblehead, Chapel Le Dale Extra: Parking at bunk-house is limited. Further parking available in pub carpark 200 yards further on right. Toilets at walk start and Pub at walk finish.
MARCHSaturday 6th: A linear walk taking in two of England’s stately homes.Train-based walk 2 Boots 11 miles Leader: Sarah Marlor Description: We will walk to Bramall Hall, along Ladybrook Valley, beside Poynton Pool and through farmland to the Middlewood Way. At this point (6 miles) any who want a short walk can catch the train from Middlewood Station. The rest of us will continue through Lyme Park to the hall and up the hill to the Cage. We will then drop down and follow Bollinghurst Brook to Macclesfield Canal. Here, those who want to can join the Middlewood Way to the station, while those who would like a drink can walk along the canal to the pub before walking a final mile to the station later. (Map OS Explorer 268) Meet Point: Manchester Piccadilly station at 9.40 for train at 9.48 Suggested Ticket: Day Ranger (£4) which covers all routes. Sunday 7th: North Snowdonia (Aber Falls, Llwytwor and Foel-Fras)Car-based walk 4 Boots 11 miles 942m climb Leader: Pete Dolan Description: A challenging circular hike starting from Abergwyngregyn, North Snowdonia. Starting at near sea level we climb along rocky ledges and screes towards Aber Falls, then the hard work begins with a climb over unpathed territory to the submit of Llwytmor (849m) and Foel-fras (942m). From Foel-fras the route is easier as we descend northeasterly along the ridge towards Drum and Carnedd Y Ddelw where we pick a track back to Abergwyngregyn. If the weather is clear there will be good views across the Menai Straits to Anglesey. This is a very exposed walk, if the weather is bad there is little shelter, so please come well prepared. This walk is not suitable for anyone with a fear of heights. Map OL17 Meet Point: Deansgate Locks at 08:30 Suggested Route: M56, A5117, A550, A494, A55 to Junction 13 (signed Abergwyngregyn). Follow signs to Aber Falls (about 1-2 miles past village), car park is over the bridge and to the right (not the first car park before the bridge). Saturday 13th: Shining Tor & Axe Edge MoorTrain-based walk 4.5 boots 16 miles 700m. Leader: Sarah Peppiatt Description: A long varied walk taking in the 2 highest points in the area, plus a few other smaller hills on the way. Meet Point: Manchester Piccadilly in time for the 8:52 am train to Buxton. Suggested Ticket: Return to Buxton (£8.20) or Wayfarer ticket to cover travel in as well (£10 – can’t buy on the train). Walk Start Location: Whaley Bridge station at 9.30 am. Waypoints: Whaley Bridge station, Glebe Farm, Taxal Moor, Windgather Rocks, Cats Tor, Shining Tor, Cat & Fiddle, Cumberland Brook, Wildboarclough, Berry Bank, A54, Gradbach YHA, Turn Edge, Panniers Pool, Orchard common, Axe Edge, Burbage Edge, Beet Wood, Watford Farm, Buxton, Buxton Station. Return Services: Every hour from Buxton at xx:27. Extra: This is a long walk with a lot of ascent and descent so please be sure you’re capable of it before starting the walk. Bring a torch just in case we don’t make it before dark!
Sunday 14th: Dunsop Bridge (Forest of Bowland)Note change in walk - Hebden Bridge now on March 27th (below) Car-based walk 2.5-3 Boots 11 miles 300m climb Leader: Alastair Description: A pleasant walk through pleasant countryside, followed by a walk up and over one of the lower fells of the Forest of Bowland, followed by a pleasant river walk back (or maybe variations on a theme). Meet Point: Deansgate Locks Whitworth Street West, Manchester, M1 5LH at 09:00 (walk leader meeting here) Waypoints: Dunsop Fell, Dunsop Head, around Beatrix Fell, Stoney Clough, then through part of the Forest of Bowland. Walk Start Location: 10.30am at Dunsop Bridge car park (post office nearby is BB7 3BB). OS Explorer OL41. Suggested Route: (from Clitheroe) Find your way to Clitheroe train station. Pick up signs for B6478 and leave Clitheroe on the B6478 / Waddington Road. After 7 miles you will go through the village of Waddington and then come to the village of Newton. At Newton you should see signs off to the left for Dunlop Bridge. (If you come to the village of Slaidburn –you’ve gone too far). After about 2 miles from Newton, you will come to Dunsop Bridge, a smallish hamlet with a few houses. The car park (only one) is on the rhs, opposite to the river and before the bridge. Extra: Toilets at Dunsop Bridge car park. The pub at the end is The Inn at Whitewell (www.innatwhitewell.com), BB7 3AT.
Saturday 20th: Plumley Circular via Lower PeoverTrain-based walk 1.5 Boots 8 miles Leader: Max Townsend Description: Circular walk through the Cheshire countryside from Plumley Village via Lower Peover (pronounced “Peever”) which is famous for its Medieval Church dating back to 1269. Meet Point: Manchester Piccadilly at 10.50am in time for train at 11.17am. Suggested Ticket: £7.90 return. Walk Start Location: Plumley Station at 12.05pm. Waypoints: Bucklow Farm, M6 Motorway, Lower Peover, Swan Green, Cheadle Farm, Golden Pheasant Inn. Return Services: Back to Manchester 43 mins past each hour. Extra: No toilets at Plumley Station. Pub stops at Swan Green and at walk end.
Sunday 21st: Mountain Walk for Non-Mountaineers - Old Man of Coniston (803m)Car-based walk 3.5 Boots 7 miles 750m climb Leader: Andrew Armstrong Description: This walk is aimed at people who are used to walking but would like to progress further afield ascending mountains and gaining experience on mountain terrain, and of course enjoying the (hopefully) panoramic views from the summit. Within the day's time limits, we will progress at a steady peace and remain as a group to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable day's walking. This is not meant for fast-paced walkers but some experience will be required as well as willingness, determination and be prepared for a long day. Meet Point: Deansgate Locks, Whitworth Street West, Manchester, M1 5LH at 08:00 Suggested Route: M602, M60, M61, M6 till junction 36. Saturday 27th: Hebden Bridge (Northside – Hebden Dale, Blank Hill, Lumb Hole Waterfall)Train-based walk 2 Boots 10 miles Leader: Alastair (will meet at Manchester Victoria Station) Description: A circular walk through to the North of Hebden Bridge and also Heptonstall. A pleasant wooded river valley, leading onto moorland, followed by a return through another equally pleasant treed river valley. Meet Point: Manchester Victoria station for the 10:21 train to Hebden Bridge Suggested Ticket: Should be about £8.00 Walk Start Location: Hebden Bridge Station at 11:05. Waypoints: A walk through Heptonstall, on to Hebden Dale, up to Black Hill, then across to Lumb Hole Waterfall, then down through Midgehole and back to Hebden Bridge Return Services: Leave Hebden Bridge station generally xx:08, xx:28, xx:56 til 20:28, then hourly.
OR Saturday 27th: Loopline linearTrain-based walk 0.5 Boots 5 miles Leader: Gavin Poulton Description: An easy flat morning walk along a former railway line and around a reservoir, so that you can attend the Area AGM in the afternoon. Visit to an award-winning pub at the end. Meet Point: Manchester Piccadilly station for train at 09:52 Suggested Ticket:A single to Levenshulme (£1.50) and a single back into town (£1.50) Walk Start Location: Levenshulme station at 10:00 Return Services: xx:03 from Ryder Brow, or xx:01 & xx:31 from Gorton. Extra: The Area's AGM starts at 14:30 in the Friends' Meeting House on Mount Street in the city centre.
Sunday 28th: A Gawp at GawsworthCar-based walk 2 Boots 7.5 miles Leader: Avril Corbett, featuring her glamorous assistant Description: A post brunch walk through the varied countryside of Cheshire. Fairly flat and involves field walking, a canal towpath, marshland and one short stretch of narrow lane. Likely to be muddy especially if recent weather has been wet. There is the opportunity to visit the CAMRA heritage pub of the year for Cheshire, The Harrington Arms at the end of the walk and also to visit a delightful medieval church. Please note we will not have a lunch stop but will have a short break for drink and snacks. Meet Point: Deansgate Locks, Whitworth Street West, Manchester, M1 5LH at 12:00 Suggested Route: Follow A536 out of Macc (signposted Congleton). Pass through Gawsworth, and take the third left. Walk Start: Park on the road near the Harrington Arms at 13:30. Friday 2nd: Pennine Way LinearTrain-based walk 2.5 Boots 13 miles 500m climb Leader: Adrian Radcliffe Description: Littleborough to Greenfield, a linear walk heading southwards on the Pennine Way. Meet Point: Manchester Victoria Railway Station for train at 10.00 Suggested Ticket: Day Ranger Ticket £4.00 Walk Start Location: Littleborough station at 10:30. Waypoints: Blackstone Edge, White Hill, Little Moss, Dinner Stone, Diglea, River Tame and Station pub. Return Services: xx:51 Extra: 1 slow pump action toilet at Walk Start so use train's. Likely to be exposed so waterproofs and warm clothing a must.
Saturday 3rd: Radcliffe to Bury linearTram-based walk 0.5 Boots 4 miles Leader: Gavin Poulton Description: A straightforward linear walk taking in the Manchester Bolton & Bury canal. On the trip into Bury, we follow the former Bolton to Bury railway. You might fancy joining in this afternoon's walk too! Meet Point: Manchester Victoria Railway Station and take tram out to Radcliffe allowing 30 minutes for travel. Suggested Ticket: Metromax ticket (probably the cheapest) Walk Start Location: Radcliffe Metrolink stop at 10:00. Extra: No toilets; use ones at Victoria station. Pub stop and lunch stop at the end. Radcliffe Metrolink Stop can also be reached from Bolton by the 524 bus
Saturday 3rd: Curiosities Of BuryTram-based walk 2 Boots 10 miles Leader: Gavin Poulton Description: A circular afternoon walk with some oddities in the Bury area. A pub stop part way around, for which a change of footwear would be preferable. We might see the smoky train on the East Lancs Railway. Meet Point: Manchester Victoria Railway Station and take tram out to Radcliffe allowing 30 minutes for travel. Suggested Ticket: Metromax ticket (probably the cheapest) Walk Start Location: Bury Interchange near top of escalators at 13:00. Waypoints: Elton, Bolholt, Holcombe railway trackbed, Tottington, Tower Farm, Greenmount, Holcombe Brook, Summerseat, Irwell Sculpture Trail. Extra: This links into the walk in the morning. If you want to shorten this walk, you could take the steam train back to Bury!
Easter Sunday 4th: Mossley to Manchester PiccadillyTrain-based walk 2 Boots 10.5 miles 250m climb Leader: Chris Morris Description: Something a bit different – train out to Mossley and walk back into the city centre. This is the first stage of last year’s marathon walk, but in reverse. Other than a climb at the start, the rest is generally easy going. Meet Point: Manchester Victoria Railway Station for train at 10.43 or Manchester Piccadilly Railway Station for train at 10.16 (change at Stalybridge) Suggested Ticket: Return to Mossley from any GM Station £3.30 Walk Start Location: Mossley station at 11:10. Waypoints: Hartshead Pike, Park Bridge (lunch), Daisy Nook, City of Manchester Stadium, Ashton Canal, Manchester Piccadilly Extra: Finishing at Bulls Head, opposite Piccadilly station if people want to meet up afterwards.
APRILSaturday 10th: Quarry to BogTrain-based walk 3 Boots 9 miles 550m climb Leader: David Bratley Description: A linear walk requiring good walking boots. some very rough paths and deep boggy sections to be negotiated but if the sun is out great views. The walk may be very muddy, so gaiters are advisable. A late finish is highly likely due to distance. This is the shorter half of Hannah's Summer challenge to do 40 miles in 24hrs and cuts half way along the peak district connecting the two towns. Sunday 9th: HowgillsCar-based walk 3 Boots 11.5 miles 650m climb Leader: Volker Funke Description: The Howgills create a "bridge" between the Lake District fells and the Yorkshire Dales. The walk starts with a fairly steep climb, but then it quickly becomes more gentle, eventually leading to the highest point of the Howgill Fells, The Calf. All the way there are fantastic panoramic views of the Lakeland fells and the Yorkshire Dales Three Peaks (weather permitting of course!). We then continue downhill past one of the finest waterfalls in England towards an old historic Temperance pub (amongst other unusual soft drinks they sell a herbal aphrodisiac - to me it tasted like flat coke). The last part of the walk is a low-level stroll back to Sedbergh. Down through Dickens Wood and Alder Wood to a picturesque lunch stop next to a lake before continuing on to Hare Hill Gardens. The National Trust property is known for its rhododendrons and walled garden. We then wander back trough the forests around the Edge, stopping at The Wizard tearooms before heading back to Alderley Edge town. Sunday 6th: RivingtonTrain-based walk 1 Boot 8 miles 400m climb Leader: Paul Ryan Description: A walk around Rivington reservoir and woods taking in Liverpool castle on route. We will briefly stop at the Rivington Vistors centre before beginning a gradual ascent up to the pike to enjoy the views across the surrounding area and out to the coast. Weather permitting we will stop for lunch at the top of the pike, before descending and returning through the woods back to Blackrod. The day will be rounded off by a drink at the Ridgeway Arms next to Blackrod station. Wednesday 9th: Dunham TownDirect walk 1 Boot, 7.5 miles Leader: Volker Funke Description: This is a fairly long but easy evening walk, which includes walking along the Bridgewater Canal, along a dismantled railway line, through some fields and through Dunham Massey. After 3/4 of the walk we will stop at the Axe and Cleaver pub in Dunham Town (despite its name it is actually only a hamlet) for drinks (and food if you wish). The last 2 miles will be along the canal back to the walk start. Since it might be dark at that time, please bring a torch if you don't want to fall into the water! Walk Start Location: Navigation Road Station at 18:15 Transport: The 17:58 train from Stockport arrives at 18:12. Trams from Manchester run regularly and take about 20 minutes. If you prefer to drive, there is a car park next to Navigation Road Station. Return Services: The last tram to Manchester leaves at 00:12. Sunday 13th: Darwen WalkTrain-based walk 2 Boots 11 miles Leader: Owain Roberts Description: The walk begins amongst the waterfalls of Belgrave Park before climbing up to Darwen Hill, where there are spectacular views from the Jubilee Tower as far away as Blackpool, Pendle Hill and the ‘3 peaks’ of the Yorkshire Dales. We then continue across Darwen Moor with a possibility of seeing Grouse before dropping down into a forested valley by the Roddlesworth Reservoir where there will be a visit to a CAMRA pub. Tuesday June 15th: Radcliffe to Whitefield (Irwell Valley Sculpture Trail)Tram-based walk 1 Boot 5.5 miles Leader: Andrew W (meeting at walk start) Description: An easy linear evening walk along some sections of the Irwell Valley Sculpture Trail. The walk passes through woodland and part of a disused train line. It follows some of the Irwell Valley cycle route that runs from Bromley Cross to Salford Crescent. Suggested Ticket: Radcliffe Return from Manchester’s Metro Link Stations (approx £3.50). Trams run every 10 minutes so we’ll wait for a few trams to arrive before starting walk. The journey from Manchester to Radcliffe is just over 30 minutes so aim to leave Manchester at 6:45pm. Radcliffe is on the Bury line and is the stop after Whitefield Walk Start Location: Radcliffe Metro Link Car Park (just opposite Riverside School) at 7:15pm Waypoints: Radcliffe station, Irwell Sculpture trail (cycle way), Nuttall Wood, Philips Park Rd., Whitefield Extra: We will aim to visit a pub at the end of the walk (probably the ‘Eagle and Child’ which has real ales!). A real ale pub stop is planned but maybe you'll just want some tea. Don't be late! Saturday 26th: Tame Valley WayTrain-based walk 2 Boots 10 miles 300m climb Leader: Saskia Roselaar Description: A linear walk through varied terrain: canals, moors, fields and cute villages. The walk starts with a stretch along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, following the Tame Valley Way. We then follow the Tameside Trail along the edge of the moors, and climb up to the moors along Shireclough, following the Pennine Bridleway. Passing the Swineshaw Reservoirs, we keep following the Pennine Bridleway/Tameside Trail through Hollingworth Nature Reserve, the village of Hollingworth, and a final stretch along through pastureland back to Broadbottom. Meet Point: Manchester Victoria Railway Station for train at 10:27 Suggested Ticket: RailRanger, £4 (also covers Metrolink travel within city zone) Walk Start Location: Stalybridge Station at 10.45 Waypoints: Stalybridge Tesco, Mossley, Buckton Castle, Shireclough, Swineshaw Reservoirs, Hollingworth Nature Reserve, The Hague, Broadbottom. JULYSunday 4th: Slaithwaite Circular via Scapegoat HillTrain-based walk 1.5 Boots 5 miles Leader: Max Description: Short afternoon walk with a steep climb to a village perched 1100 feet on top of a hill that looks down over the rest of Yorkshire. Meet Point: Manchester Victoria Railway Station at 12.20pm for train at 12.43pm Suggested Ticket: Return to Slaithwaite, £8.50 Return Services: from Slaithwaite, xx:44. Walk Start Location: Slaithwaite Station at 1.25pm Extra: Pub stops in Scapegoat Hill and Slaithwaite at walk end. Saturday 10th: StiperstonesYou must book by Wednesday 7th July for this walk, as it includes a meal at the Stiperstones Inn (see below). Direct walk 3.5 Boots 11 miles. Leader: Kayla Description: This circular route takes us on rocky paths with some steep sections and optional scrambling in one of the leader's childhood favourite walking spots, the second highest point in Shropshire, which includes a trig point and a "Marilyn". Booking information: We've arranged this walk for a Saturday as it will be a late return to Manchester. This means we won't be able to use Deansgate as our meet point though, so please book in advance so we can arrange car shares and confirm numbers for the meal booking. Meet point: confirmed on booking - expect to depart Manchester around 8am Transport: The car journey from Manchester is 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 hours. Suggested route will be provided. The Stiperstones is a National Nature Reserve and in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The general area has a long history of lead mining, most notably during the Roman occupation of Britain.

Sunday 25th: SheffieldCar based walk 2 Boots, 10 miles Leader: Owain Roberts Description: This walk provides a great illustration of the proximity of the city of Sheffield to the Peak District. The walk begins amongst the rivers and waterfalls of Endcliffe Park before heading out into the Peak District. After around 3 miles there is a viewpoint with great views over the city and on a clear day as far as the Humber Bridge and Lincoln Cathedral. The walk then crosses moorland before passing the famous Ox Stones where there will be a stop for lunch. We will then pass through the densely forested Lady Canning's plantation before heading down the steep sided Limb Valley. The walk then crosses farmland before heading back towards the park where there will be an ice cream stop. From here it is a short distance back to Hunters Bar. There will be time for a pint of Sheffield ale in the Porterbrook before returning home.
